Articulation Function on the Korean Speech in Patients, with Hearing Impairment

Abstract
The speech audiometric data and patterns of articulation curve on various types of deafness obtained by means of tape-recorder and audiometer system. The Korean dissyllabic words are used for checking¢¥ speech reception threshold, and phonetically balanced monosyllabic word lists are transmitted to hard of hearing subjects for measuring articulation scores.
1. Patients with conductive hearing loss can obtain a speech reception threshold within 5 decibels of the average of the pure tone losses at the three speech frequencies, 500, 1000 and 2000 cycles.
2. In cases of mixed deafness, the discrepancy between speech reception threshold and, the average of the pure tone losses at the three speech frequencies is almost within 2 decibels. Their articulation curves do not show a steep slope and their maximum articulation scores do not rise as in cases of conductive hearing loss.
3. In cases of perceptive deafness, the relationship between intelligibility of speech sounds and pure tone acuity is definitely not linear. With many flat or descending hearing loss types of perceptive deafness, the S. R. T. will approximate the average of the pure tone losses at the three speech frequencies, but those with precipitous hearing loss types frequently do not yield a consistent estimate of their respective threshold for speech. In spite of increasing the, loudness of speech, some patients with perceptive deafness do not yield a proportionate increase in speech articulation score. Patients with precipitous hearing loss in high frequencies can obtain relatively high maximum articulation scores(70-90 per cent), while some cases of perceptive deafness obtain poor articulation scores below 50 percent.
4. The region 500 through 6000 cps is necessary for reception of speech sounds, however, the. results obtained by patients with precipitous hearing loss indicate that the region 1000 through 3000 cps appears to be especially important in, speech earing.
5. In the Korean language, it is shown that the most stable system for predicting speech hearing loss, is the Three-Average prediction except for some cases of perceptive hearing loss.
6. The articulation tests properly applied are very useful for a clinician who is confronted routinely with problems of hearing difficulty.
